Winter cycling in Denmark: lights, checks and a backup plan

Prepare for dark commutes with a simple bike check, winter maintenance and a public transport backup. Understand how subscription servicing works.

A winter bike does not need to look good. It needs to be ready for the journey, and you need another option when conditions are poor. Begin with a few checks instead of a long shopping list.

Before leaving

Switch on both lights and check that they work. Check for unusually soft tyres and try the brakes slowly in a safe place. If something affects your control of the bike, do not use the commute as a test ride.

The Danish Road Safety Council explains required bicycle equipment, including lighting in darkness and poor visibility. Make sure bags and clothing do not obscure the lights or reflectors.

Winter maintenance is more than pumping tyres

The Danish Cyclists' Federation's winter preparation guide includes keeping lights and reflectors clean and maintaining the bike. Ask a mechanic if you are unsure about lubrication, tyres or brakes.

For a subscription bike, discuss substantial changes with the provider. Do not commission repairs elsewhere expecting automatic reimbursement. A servicing arrangement is not permission to invoice any workshop visit to the provider.

Have a non-cycling plan

An alternative bus or train route is most useful when you know it before getting caught in bad weather. Check departure points, journey time and somewhere to leave the bike. If you take it on a train, check the rules for that particular service too.

We do not recommend cycling regardless of conditions. If the surface or visibility makes you uncomfortable, walk the bike or use another form of transport. See our bike and public transport guide.

What Ring Ring handles

A Ring Ring bike is handed over with a lock, lights and the agreed equipment. Ordinary faults and wear are handled through your assigned shop under the agreement. Check opening hours before visiting. If no replacement bike is available, the terms describe the alternative arrangement and timing.

There is no roadside service van. Contact us or the shop when a bike cannot safely be ridden, so the next step can be agreed. Read how the subscription works.

A small practical kit

Consider gloves that let you brake comfortably, a way to keep your bag dry and enough phone battery to check the alternative route while stopped. You do not need sports equipment to ride to class. Choose what helps with your actual commute rather than buying everything labelled for winter.
