A bike for one semester in Denmark: dates, costs and return

Plan your semester bike budget, compare buying and subscribing, and avoid confusing a six-month commitment with your actual departure date.

A semester and a six-month bike subscription are not necessarily the same period. Start with the dates you will collect and return the bike. Orientation, exams and travel can extend your stay beyond teaching weeks or shorten it considerably.

Put three dates in your calendar

Note your arrival date, the first day you need the bike and the last day you can visit a bike shop. If you fly home on Sunday, a Saturday closing time can determine when you need to return it. Plan transport to the airport after the return too.

For a four- or five-month stay, compare the entire commitment with a monthly plan and its notice period. A cheaper monthly figure does not necessarily produce a smaller total bill. Do not base the decision solely on the word “semester”.

A six-month Ring Ring example

The six-month plan is DKK 99 per month. This example assumes six monthly payments, with no theft or damage charges and a normal return.

Item Amount
Six monthly payments DKK 594
Setup DKK 0
Refundable deposit paid upfront DKK 300
First month plus deposit at the start DKK 399

The deposit is security, not insurance or a monthly charge. Amounts you owe may be deducted from it. Our price guide explains the other costs to consider.

Buying can also make sense

A used bike can suit you if you can handle repairs and have time to sell it before leaving. A subscription includes access to your assigned shop for ordinary faults. You do not own the bike at the end.

In your comparison, separate purchase price, maintenance and possible resale proceeds. A hopeful resale figure is not money back in your account. Our buying versus subscribing guide walks through the trade-off without assuming that one option suits everyone.

Give us your home location and campus

With Ring Ring, you choose a women's or men's bike, city and postcode. We then check whether we can arrange a shop for you. Collection is not confirmed until we have agreed a shop and date. Mention your intended start date and campus, especially if your accommodation is far from teaching buildings.

Arrange the end before you leave

A six-month commitment does not automatically cancel the subscription. Follow the notice period in your agreement, obtain confirmation of the end date and return the bike and keys. Keep the return receipt. Read the collection and return checklist.
